"best" is very subjective. You can take the express train, a taxi, a bus or a private transfer. Only you can decide which is best. For more information check out the "top questions" in the upper right for all of your options.

The Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore (supposing it's that) is at few blocks from Termini. Paying 14 euros each person for the highly expensive train Leonardo Express to Termini, then a taxi too, doesn't make much sense to me. If you want to take a taxi, take it from the airport and make sure before starting you'll pay the fixed fare of 48 euros.

If you want to save some money, take the other train FL1 to the station Roma Ostiense (8 euros each person) and then take the metro, line B, direction Rebibbia/Conca d'Oro, to Cavour, then walk few minutes to the Basilica.
