Can't find one way flights without paying double

After reading some posts regarding the positive nature of flying into Rome and then flying out of Florence back to the states after ending our trip in Florence I checked out flights. It is double the cost just to fly one way. Is this normal? It is half the price to fly both in and out of one location. We are looking to travel the week of Easter. Thank you.

Are you looking at two 1-way tickets or are you searching "multi-city" flights?

One-way flights are always much more expensive; I have flown often into one city in Italy and home from another using the "multi-city" feature when searching for flights.

Use either the multi-city or open jaw options for flights. One way are generally more expensive.

Thank you! I did search one way, not multi-city. I will try again.

Just another option: lately round-trip Milan from the US has been a good value, sometimes even when adding in the train travel to go with it.

I think you're problem is that you are asking the site for 2 one way tickets. Go to: >kayak.com< and click on the "Multi-city" option. (1st flight) - NYNY to Rome, and (2nd flight) - Florence to NYNY. That is called 'open jaw' here on TA...you won't find that option on a flight site.

Thank you. I have another question. I did the multi-city and the prices were equal to the roundtrip to Rome BUT the overnight or long hour layovers kind of ruin it. I'm thinking it's almost less hassle to take the train back to Rome to be able to fly direct and get home in 8 hours or so than 30 hours of travel.

Where do I buy the train tickets once I purchase my flights? Thank you!

Make sure you select Multi city.

So

NYC to Rome

Florence to NYC

For the best prices, book the train tickets as soon as possible. Trenitalia tickets go on sale 4 months before travel, and the cheapest tickets can sell out quickly. Italo sales are rather less predictable.

See www.trenitalia.com and www.italotreno.it
