I have to ask--how on earth is the fountain water so good?

No worries, I totally believe everyone is right in saying that you can drink fountain water, but how is that possible?

Do they treat the entire water system or something? I'm assuming you have to fill up your bottle as it comes out of the fountain, and not when it's just sitting there in the pool beneath it. Right?

I think it's fascinating and fantastic, regardless. I just want to know how it works.

We, too, were very dubious and am still surprised we didn't get sick. We always filled pour bottles directly, never from the pool. I have no idea how it works but after a couple of days of paying too much for bottled water, we decided to try it. No bad side effects from it. Can't say it tasted worse or better - but it was free. They were more abundant in Rome. We didn't find too many in Florence and none in Venice.

Must be all the people who wash their feet there and the pigeon droppings that give it that extra taste that bottled water doesn't have!!!!

Hi

My wife and I went to Rome in July last year and it was hot when we walked around town. We brought along water bottles and we just filled up the bottles at water fountains around town. I didn't think that the water tasted that great but I didn't have any problem drinking it and it was a great and cheap way to cool down at various places around town :-)

Regards

On a tour the guide told us that all of the water comes straight from underground and its the same natural spring water that you buy in the bottles from the shops. Its fine to drink straight from the pipes as they come out of the ground but didnt advise on drinking it from the pool of the fountain. It does save alot of money on having to buy drinks and tastes good too.

Those of you who can read Italian will find this article (from the website of a major Italian consumerism association) interesting:

http://www.altroconsumo.it/map/src/107612.htm

It basically says that lab tests confirm that overall the quality of Italian tap water is on a par with bottled mineral water, with the best water being available in L’Aquila, Cagliari, Pavia, Aosta e Bergamo.

So what happens to all the water in the pool?

Usually it recirculates back to the fountain. So where does it all go?

Which is as good a reason as any for not drinking the water.
