Where to stay in Rome depends upon your interests and preferences and, to a significant extent, your budget. For the convenience of being able to walk to multiple sights (albeit you can't walk to all the major sights), as well as the ability to just stroll and explore, and try different restaurants and bars, I recommend the heart of the historic center -- Pantheon, Spanish Steps/Trevi, Piazza Navona/Campo de' Fiori, Monti/Colosseo, Jewish Ghetto, or close in parts of Trastevere. I also recommend checking on access to public transportation and taxi stands. Always look up the specific address of an apartment or hotel before booking. This is very important because two addresses within the same "neighborhood" can be at significantly different distances to the heart of the historic center.
We will be in Rome later next month. Everyone suggested to book a hotel at Piazza Navona/Pantheon/Trevi/Spanish Steps area so we will be staying at a B&B between Piazza Navona and Pantheon called Baghirova in Rome it's not too cheap nor too expensive. There's also Hotel Navona a few steps away from Baghirova in Rome but unfortunately it wasn't available in our dates.
We stayed in the Pantheon area, actually right next to Adriano Temple in the Piazza di Pietra (Albergo Cesari), and was able to walk to (or at least home from) every site we visited including Borghese Gallery, Vatican, Coliseum, Spanish Steps etc...Would not stay anywhere else if we visit again due to the convenience of walking and the overall charm of the area
We got a great location at the Artemide hotel. The staff have been great setting everything up, more so than others we checked on. The hotel is in a great location so we can walk to most things we wish to see.
We stayed near the Termini station at Hotel Piemonte
IMO, if this is your first visit to Rome, you should stay somewhere within the historical center of Rome, i.e., around the Pantheon/Piazza Navona area. If your budget permits, take a look at Albergo del Senato. It is a wonderful hotel.
We were between Britannia and Artemide. We wanted a Jacuzzi to relax in after a hard day of walking. Artmide had great reviews, was in the center where we wanted to be and close to the Rail road Station. We have to leave 6:25 Am to Munich via train, Artemide won. they were prompt with replies, made great recommendations. Suggested the best view room, and we still have not heard from Britannia!
We will be there only 5 days and I have been there before, but the wife has not.
