Where are the best ones in Rome?
There are 5 catacombs around Rome. All of them are outside the Aurelian Walls. 3 of them (St Callistus, Domitilla and St sebastian are on the Appian Way. Detail Map of the Appian Way catacombs
you can get there on bus 118 (from Pirmamide) , or the Metro A+ bus 660, or b us 218 (San Giovanni Latereno).
The St agnese Catacombs are in Eastern Rome. You can see the mosaics in St Agnese Outside the Wall and the Mausoleum of St Constanza along with the catacombs. You can get there on bus 90 from Termini
The Priscilla Catacombs are in North Rome. YOu can get ther using bus 63
The link contained in bvlenci's response contains her excellent description of catacombs and other info:
St Sebastain is the best tour. Very few tourists and lots of other stuff in the church. There is Bernini's last sculpture, Roman Ruins etc.You won't be disappointed. No tour necessary.
St sebastian is closed sundays. Check the hours fopr the closure days on the others
Here is the direct link to my description of the five catacombs:
None of the catacombs attracts big crowds except San Callisto; I've been to all five, and to three of them multiple times. I didn't find San Sebastiano to be terribly interesting, certainly not as interesting as the Priscilla or Sant'Agnese catacombs.
