Transportation from Rome to Venice

My husband and I are visiting Italy for first time, and are stops are Rome, Venice, Florence, and Siena. We are using public transportation. We would appreciate any advice about how to get from Rome to Venice. Is train best bet? Which train.? How long is the trip? How about flying - Rome/Venice? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. We will be travelling on October 17.

Just returned from Rome. Take train from the Termini station. 4.5 hours to Venice. If you fly 2.5 hours and then take the taxi boat from the airport to St. Marks. However, plane is very expensive. Train ride is a breathtaking adventure! The train station leaves you off at the Grand Canal. Once you see the canal from the station for the first time, you mouth will drop. Train travel is the only way to go. Purchase guide books. I use Frommer's and Steve's whenever I travel. Different perspective for same location. Be a traveler not a tourist. You will have a great, wonderful time.

I stronglyh suggest the train.

See http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

A few hints:

For the main train station in Rome, use Rome TE

For the "real" Venice train station use Venice S.L.

For the main Florence station, use Firenze S.M.N.

You might consider a bus for Florence - Siena as it is easier, faster and the drop off/pick up spot in Siena is much better.

Since you know so much about the "train-taking" there, can you tell everyonr how much it costs?

My mom is getting married and I'm doing some research for her.

Hello,

The official train site is trenitalia. You can check them online to see schedules and prices. They only put their schedule out about 2 months ahead of time so you won't be able to check October fares but you can check the fares they have now to get a good idea of fares and times. It won't change drastically before you go.

You can take a train from Rome to florence in about 1.5 hours for 28.9 euros second class using the "amica" fare. You can go from Florence to Venice in about 2.6 hours for 25.8 euros second class using the amica fare. You can go from Venice to Rome in about 4.5 hours for 44.9 euros second class using the amica fare. The amica fare is a 20% discount fare that must be purchased at least 24 hours in advance. You can purchase all of your tickets once you get to Italy. There will be no porblems getting the time and trains you want. The trenitalia site will not take non-italian issued credit cards so you won't be able to purchase through them.

The info on trains from Rome to Venice is helpful. Does anyone know the best way to get to the cruise terminal from the train station in Venice? Also, which train station in Venice would be closest to the cruise terminal?

There is only one Station in Venice, Santa Lucia, from there to get to the cruise termial Stazione Marittima, you need to grt to Piazzale Roma, this is a short walk, now thwe new Bridge is operational, from P. Roma the is a Cruise shuttle, but check with your cruise line otherwise a Land Taxi can take you the short distance.

If I want to go to Venice from Rome in the morning, stop over at Florence (Pisa), arrived at Veniced at night, which kind of transportation will fit the best? How much does it cost?

I found on trenitalia, there's only 1 trip at night from Rome to Florence, and also 1 trip at night from Florance to Venecia. Should i take a bus to go to Florence then continue by train to venecia at night?

There is a timetable change on 12 June and the train times after that date have not been settled, so there is no information on the Trenitalia site.

The schedules will not change much, so for planning use dates in the next week or so. You will see plenty of trains.

I am planning my trip to Italy for the summer and I was just on the trenitalia website and there are a lot of different fares but I dont see the amica fare. Does it have a new title or no longer exist? What does it mean if I chose the Flessibile fare? Thanks so much!

The Amica fare, if available, is shown as a choice when you come to make a booking.

Don't stress yourself. It is highly unlikely you will be able to make an advance booking, as the Trenitalia site hardly ever takes cards issued outside Europe. Just buy the tickets when you get to Italy.
