Flights from Chicago to Rome

This is our first family trip to Europe. Heading to Rome with two children. Would love to hear about great/good/bad airline experiences from Chicago to Rome - which airlines, best layovers. Thanks!

I fly American direct when in season, stop over when not. I like the service as a rule -- few problems, on time mostly, usually great staff.

We've flown thru Chicago and directly if the pricing is better than connecting from St. Louis. I second American. If you can get a direct flight for not much more. The last two times, we've flown with 2 kids and opted for connections, the savings were too great to pass up.

We've connected thru London, Brussels, Frankfurt. I worry about having enough time to go thru customs, but we've never actually had any problem in Europe. Even if there would have been a problem, usually there will be another flight in an hour or two.

I looked recently (this week, actually) and noticed both United and Swiss had deals out of Chicago.
