Vatican tour or not?

Will be visiting the Vatican for the first time and am wondering if I should join a tour or would audio guides (are these available for rental there?) be good enough?

Also I read that early afternoons might be a better time to go as some tours would have ended by then. Is that recommended?

Don't take a tout's tour. Just buy the tickets on line from the Vatican web site and get a recorded audio when you're there if you feel like having one. The touts promise you there is a 2 hour queue which is nonsense and you waste more time hanging around for their tour to be ready

The lines in the morning can be two or more hours long. It's not a lie. If you want more information about what you're seeing in the museums a guide or audio guide is the way to go. I like audio guides since it allows me to go at my own pace and choose what I want to see.

You probably hit a bad day, but buying tickets in advance from the official Vatican website cures the queuing problem and as you rightly say the audio guide is the way to go - not hanging around waiting for people to catch up and ask their stupid questions
