Train Journies from Bologna

Hello we are spending a few days in Bologna in May 2012. We have already decided to take a train to Florence, but wondered if there is anywhere else we can reach by train or bus in under 1.5 hours each way that is worth a visit.

Thanks

By train from Bologna you can reach Ravenna, Mantua, Venice, Parma and Verona in under an hour and a half. In an hour you can reach Parma and half an hour Modena. All highly "worth a visit" but how many days spare do you have as there is so much to see and enjoy in Bologna?

We took the train to Modena to visit Acetaia di Giorgio to see how they produce traditional balsamic vinegar. It's in a couple's home and balsamic vinegar has been produced by the family for 150 years. The tour and tasting was interesting and we bought some 12+ y/ and 25+ y/o vinegar. They were great hosts. We took a taxi from the train statio to the acetaia. http://www.acetaiadigiorgio.it/

We also took the train to Parma to visit a Parmigianno Reggiano dairy to see the cheese made. Again, we took a taxi from the train station to the dairy. The tours are in the morning because they receive the milk from the previous evening and mix it with the morning's milking to make the cheese. It's all done before about 10:30 am.

I second Ferrara and also vote for a stop and lunch in Reggio Emilia (just did this last week).
