Trenitalia runs trains from Bologna to Perugia via Florence. See www.trenitalia.com clicking on the UK flag to change to English.

Maybe it's better to rent a car, going to Umbria by train I think it's quite difficult, you have to take 2 at least from Bologna.

Of course you can consider to hire a car.

If you decide for the train, you could catch just two trains, one on Bologna-Firenze (Florence) stretch (plenty of trains at all hours), another on Firenze-Perugia stretch. There are direct trains from Firenze on the afternoon at 9 minutes of every even hour (12:09, 14:09, and so on). Final destination: Foligno. Open the website quoted by Sydneynick.

From Perugia station, if you have to go downtown, there is a newly built "minimetro" (useful also if you drive):

Changes of train are occasionally at Terentola-Cortona rather than Florence, but the Trenitalia website will tell you where to change for each departure time. There is also one direct train, at 20.18.
