Recommendations whilst staying Parma?

Any recommendations for things to see and do whilst staying in Parma in July? We will be visiting friends for a long weekend, but need to occupy ourselves while they are at work. Is it possible (and worth) visiting neighbouring cities such as Verona, Modena, Genoa etc, or is the travelling too much? Can you do it by train/bus, or do you need a car? Grateful for any tips to make the most of our trip, as we don't have funds to repeat it in the near future! Thanks.

This thread (and links) discusses what to see and do in Parma - Parma:

Visit Bologna, Modena, even Florence, but many of the cities you've listed are very far from Parma with long train journeys.

Thanks Vagabonda, I've checked out those links and articles. I think Verona, Bologna and Modena might be do-able if they are worth the effort. Train rides seem about 30-90 mins, which is ok - over 120 mins starts making it tricky, especially when there are few trains each day. This has ruled out Venice, Florence, Genoa etc.

Any other recommendations gratefully received!

Modena, Bologna and Ferrara are easy reachable and take less than 2 hours from Parma by train.

For Verona it takes 2 1/2 hours while for Venice it takes 3h+.

Maybe it's better to remain in the Emilia-Romagna region.

We would not rule out Busseto to be enhanced of the composer Giuseppe Verdi.

It is the 200th anniversary of his birth and his birth town (he was born in the locality Roncole Verdi) organises many events.

Can I say just enjoy Parma. It is a stunning place with a wealth of art and architecture. Don't miss the Art Gallery inside the Pilotta Palace, reached via the old wooden theatre inside, nor the cathedral and baptistry which are both covered with glorious frescoes inside. A lovely opera house to tour as well (we didn't have enough time for that one)

You could also drive to Torrechiara Castle

I had the same thought - Why leave Parma? You could easily enjoy only Parma on a long weekend!
