Where to stay

We are 3 ladies in our 60's and have flights in May arriving in Nice and 8 days later leaving from Pisa. We are staying the first night in Nice and the last night in Pisa .We are hoping to travel by train and stay in 2 places along the way for 3 nights each.

We like quiet places but would either travel in the area by bus or hire a car in one of our stopovers.

We are not worried about beaches -we would much rather see scenic villages with interesting churches, buildings and scenery .

We have travelled quite a lot in Italy and enjoyed Calabria , Puglia, the Lakes and the Amalfi Coast -we also have enjoyed Provence and the French Alps so are hoping that we enjoy and could get a taste for this area of Italy

Look at Camogli. Waterfront old village. Large mother church. Pedestrianized (no cars) in the old quarter. Ferries to Potofino, Santa Margherita, Rapallo. walking trails. Can also get to Cinque Terre by train.

Take a look at Santa Margherita Ligure. It has a train station, many hotels and restaurants, ferries to Portofino, a beautiful harbor, and a promenade along the harbor. It's a splendid little town. Cinque Terre is an hour south by train.

This map shows the Ligurian towns and villages of the organizations The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy (I Borghi Piu Belli) and the Italian Auto Club's Orange Flags Initiative (Bandiere Arancione)

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit…

All are fairly small, many are in rural areas and hard to reach by public transport, but some are on trains lines or quite near a station. Near the coast are Laigueglia, Cervo, Noli, Finalborgo, Moneglia, and Vernazza (part of the Cinque Terre).

Of course there are many good choices not included - such as Camogli - but perhaps one of these will suit your tastes.

We can heartily support your choice of Diano Marina. We had a lovely 3 days there staying at the Hotel Golfo e Palme with a sea view. Have a nice trip!
