Must try food in Cinque Terre

Hi,

Any recommendations on restaurant?

Or must try cuisine or food in CinqueTerre.

We'd love to try local food which is not expensive and explore local cuisine.

The most typical and "unique" thing to try are anchovies. Local anchovies from Monterosso are our most typical fish, and are prepared in many different ways. Ristorante Miky, La Cantina di Miky, Trattoria Oscar and L'Ancora della Tortuga have several different preparations on the menus for you to try. If you are worries about budget, then get some fried ones for takeaway under the station in Monterosso at Bocconcino, or in any of the tons of fry shops in the other villages.

Focaccia is another very typical thing we eat here, you can get a slice to take away and eat it on the sea.

Pesto is typical from Liguria as well, as is pansotti (like a raviolo) with walnut sauce, though now many restaurants don't make the recipe from tradition as tourists don't like the taste of the traditional prescinsêua cheese (foreign taste buds think this cheese tastes sour).

Unfortunately, the mediterranean is quite overfished and local, fresh fish is quite expensive, which you will see reflected on menu pricing here. You very much "get what you pay for" in terms of fresh fish at restaurants in the Cinque Terre, but most tourists sadly don't even seem to notice that their "tourist menu" with fish at 15€ for 3 courses is frozen fish from asia. Several restaurants, fortunately, do use fresh product (some named above), but they are not cheap. Other good ones are Dau Cila in Riomaggiore and Capitano in Vernazza (they make a great Tian, an anchovy dish typical of Vernazza).

Also try Farinata di Ceci made with chickpea flower - typical of the area and often available where they sell focaccia.

There is a great restaurant in Vernazza called: Belforte. It also overlooks the sea which makes it even more special. Cinque Terre is famous for their Pesto sauce. Seafood is also another must and of course finish the meal with Limoncello. Enjoy!

We enjoyed Ristorante Ciak in Monterosso for seafood. Our favourite place was Torre Aurora which sits on a point above Monterosso. The views are stunning, great food, wonderful staff and a relaxed vibe.

The main thing we noticed everywhere in Italy was how good the tomatoes tasted! My favourite afternoon meal was parma ham, burrata or mozzarella and roma tomatoes with some bread. Add an Aperol Spritz and life is wonderful!

Thanks for your discussion on the local seafood. Very helpful! We are going in on a weekend in late October. How far in advance do you need to make reservations for your restaurant recommendations?

We got reservations on the day or the day before. October should be pretty easy I think. The only thing is for places like Torre Aurora there are some tables that are on the outside that get much better views, so booking those earlier will be safer!

Enjoy!
