Stay in Cinque Terre or La Spezia

We are 2 middle age couples with suitcases going to Cinque Terre in Sept , We have a car. It seems that Cinque Terre has lots of steps and our concern is suitcases and very moderate accommodations. Do you think it would be easier to drive to La Spezia and then do two day trips to Cinque Terre leaving the suitcases in the hotel in La Spezia.??

no....go to Levanto and drive to your accomodation....subject to choice.

use the Cinque pass to go by train to any of the villages.

it is only 4 mins by train to monterosso ...35 mins by road or 3 hours to walk.

Levanto is a beaut place to relax in away from the frenetic crowds in the cinque villages and you have all the easy access you need.

to me La Spezia has not much going for it.....specially for first timers not as able to discerne the nuances of the area

Mausgrass is right on regarding Levanto.

LaSpezia is about as much fun as Reading.

We stayed in Monterosso, found it fairly flat. 'dropped our car off in LaSpetzia and found it to be a bit gritty and non touristy, friendly enough though but industrial. CT roads are a bit twisty and Monterosso has parking.

OMG, I knew it would come up here, a La Spezia chamber of commerce film. Those boats, that flashing light house, that shipyard, those ladies....how can we resist?

We have a different view than the others after many trips there. To really enjoy the experience, stay in Cinque Terre. We prefer Vernazza. No modern accommodations there, but that's the charm. There's a secured 24-hour car park in La Spezia. Just take what you need to Cinque Terre. Two nights is great. You'll be able to walk from your apartment to the restaurants at night and hike by day, taking the train back. It's a fantastic experience.

Levanto would be a choice over La Spezia. But there's nothing like taking the train to Vernazza and enjoying a couple days in paradise.

sorry tumble.....just back from many trips to the cinque and Rick Steves has finally killed it.....or the german equivalent of him Richarditz Stevehagen.

In early april the place was ballistic.....troops of guided minions of both the aforementioned snarling up any passageways and asking loudly the most inane questions.

Vernazza for the first time did not even make us want to linger at our favourite dining places as the clamour precluded whatever chance of waxing lyrical with random travellers.

it is a place for a first timer to suck in the ambience of what was once a brilliant walk and beaut grazing possibilities and it is a definite visit for the first uppers but we now stay in levanto to take out the terror tourist dummies.

......not putting you off just trying to give some sanity into the argument.

Completely agree with Levanto suggestion. This is what we did and never regretted it.
