Best budget town to use as a base

We plan to spend 3 days in Cinque Terre this September. We are on a budget, but would like at least a 3 star B&B or hotel to use as our base as we visit each town. We will be traveling by train. Any suggestions as to which town is best? Any particular hotel or B& B? Thanks in advance!

Try Porto Venere...and if you don't have reservations, time's a wasting.

I am not sure that Portovenere would be the best choice, as you have to take a bus from La Spezia.

It really does not matter where you stay. The train gets from Monterosso to Riomaggiore in some 15 minutes.

There are no towns in the Cinque Terre. They are 5 small villages which in season are overwhelmed by the demand for accommodation. By now, it will be a question of where you can find that has a vacancy in September.

Pay no attention to hotel stars in Italy. They are allocated entirely on the basis of physical facilities, and say nothing about whether the hotel is comfortable or well-run.

Maybe try outside the Cinque Terre. For example, Sestri Levante http://www.sestri-levante.net/en has lots of accommodation and is only 20-30 minutes from Monterosso by train.

And there's Levanto, which is much nearer.
