Trails open?

Hello,

I am planning on travelling to Cinque Terre at the beginning of October and wondering which/whether the trails are open. Can anyone give me a summary of the trails that are open and closed?

Based on the open/closed trails, which town would be the best to stay? For example, if the trail from Riomaggiore to Manarola is closed, then staying in Riomaggiore wouldn't be very helpful!

Many thanks,

Mamaliga.

Riomaggiore would not be a good place to start since the Trail to Manarola is not forecast to re-open until sometime next year. Monterosso would be the best place for you to stay since the Trail to Vernazza should be open as it has been most of the summer months. The low level trail from Manarola to Corniglia has been closed for a very long time now so will certainly not be open. However the Trail from Venazza to Corniglia has been open recently so may be open during your visit. It is not possible to predict in advance which of the Trails will be open since it does depend very much on the weather conditions. With regular trains between all the villages and a selection of high level Trails which are not affected so much if you stay in Monterosso you can decide on the day where you can walk. There is also the excellent Trail between Monterosso and Levanto which has not ben affected by any closures.

If you want to stay in Riomaggiore and hike, there are still plenty of opportunities for you - the trail 2/blue trail is not the only hike in the region, but certainly the most famous as well as the most crowded.

The trail 3 from Riomaggiore to the sanctuary of montenero is great (www.parconazionale5terre.it/viasantuari.asp) as well as the longer hike to portovenere - which is totally worth it. Amazing views.

You can also do Riomaggiore-Volastra-Manarola and then train it between the villages - the train takes just a few minutes.

All in all, if Riomaggiore is your first choice it is by all means not a bad one - there is plenty of hiking to do easily accessible from there as well.

Thanks everyone. You are all so informative and helpful!

I am actually tossing up between Manarola and Monterosso (Riomaggiore was just an example - probably not the best one to use!).

Manarola seems like a nicer place to stay (more quaint, and Monterosso more touristy?), but Monterosso may be a better option if the trails out from Manarola are closed (which seems to be the case). From your comments, Monterosso might be a better option as it seems the trails are open from here in all directions. . .

Any other subsequent thoughts you might have would be most welcome! :)

Found this link to a website on another recent post - shows the status for all the trails. Is great!

(But still welcome any tips re: Monterosso vs Manarola- thanks!)

I am afraid all the villages are rather touristy, patricularly during the day due to the large number of day visitors. Vernazza is regarded by many as the most scenic and may be a better option than Manarola if you intend to walk the Trails since you could walk the Trail to Monterosso and that to Cornigilia. Monterosso is certaily the largest and one of its main attractions is in having the only real beaches of the villages. However with the frequent trains between the villages where you actually stay is not that important, try to find the best place you can within your budget.

Thanks everyone. Have opted for Manarola and will look at doing the recommended trails.

Might catch you on the trail!

All the best,

Ronnie.
