One day trip to Pisa AND Cinque Terre

I can only spare one day for a detour and would really love to travel to Pisa for the Leaning Tower AND Cinque Terra from Florence.

Is it possible or it will be too rush?

Any suggestion on how to go about it?

How should I allocate my hours?

Check out the train traveling times between your destinations at www.trenitalia.com , choosing the British flag, and using Firenze, Pisa, and the name of any of the villages you want to begin in. After you add up all the times, then you can decide if all the travel time will worth it to you and give you the experience you want.

On the trenitalia website, you must enter Firenze S M Novella, Pisa Centrale, and Riomaggiore one end of the Cinque Terre or Monterosso at the other, or one of the villages in between.

Pisa San Rossore is an alternative station nearer to the tower, but with a worse train service and without the frequent buses from Pisa Centrale.

hi: it is long enough to go from Florence to the Cinque Terre for a 'day trip'... adding in Pisa and the Field of Miracles would, for me, not be a pleasant or doable experience. The train from Florence to the CT is a good 3 hrs and requires train changes....and you want to actually be in one of the CT villages, so add 2 more hours, then train back to Florence another 3 hours...you're at 8 hours and you haven't even walked up to the Field of Miracles in Pisa.

Let's break it down and say you went from Florence to Pisa (1.5 hrs) and walked up to the Field (20-25 minutes) and visited the sites there (1-2 hrs) and walked back to the station but got hungry and wanted lunch on the way (1 hr) and then waited for the next train (15 min-1hr) and then continued on to the Cinque Terre (1.5 hrs?) and transfer in La Spezia for the little trains (15 min or more) THEN you wish to visit at least one village (2 hrs) and then take the train back to Florence (3 hrs).....we're a good 11 hours.

Thank you Chester9cat.

After reading your reply, it does make me realised that it would be quite a rush.

However, I only have one day to spare and I would really love to visit this two places.

Thanks anyway for your feedback! Really appreciate it!

One other thing to consider is whether it is sufficient for you to simply view the tower, or if you plan to climb it. Climbing the tower doesn't take much time, but you should reserve a spot in advance so you don't waste time (they only allow a limited number of people in the tower at the same time). You can find information on reservations here: http://www.opapisa.it/en/home-page.html

So, if you get the 6:53 AM train from Florence you'd be at Pisa Centrale at about 8:10. It's a ten minute cab ride or a brisk twenty minute walk (1.1 miles) from the train station to the Piazza dei Miracoli, the location of the tower.

Allow yourself about 90 minutes to check out the tower area, then back to the station for a 10:47 train to La Spezia, connecting there to a train to Monterosso al Mare that arrives at 12:24.

At this point you'd have the rest of they day to work your way south through the other four villages before heading back to Florence.
