Genoa area - how long?

We are big fans of Italy (go 2 or 3 times each year to Sorrento) and have also visited Rome, Venice, Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Lake Garda .............. you get my drift?! Love it!

Have now booked flights for the end of this month to Genoa which will give us 4 full days (5 nights) in the area - which we don't know at all. We are probably looking to book the Romantik Hotel Villa Pagoda as our base - in Nervi (?) and travel from there, although we will not be hiring a car. Is this the right decision or should we perhaps consider staying for a couple of the nights in Portofino (not in one of the major euros Hotels though!) Maybe the first 2 nights there or going for 2 nights at the end? Are taxi transfers feasible - apparently it is not too far from Genoa?

I am slightly worried that we may be staying too long but hubbie wanted a relaxing trip for our 21st Wedding Anniversary.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

Genoa surely has a lot to offer -- I lived there 20 years and I'm positive I didn't manage everything worth seeing!

The hotel is great and in a lovely location, but it's about 10 km East of the center. The bus trip (#17) takes at least 30/40 minutes. Buses for Recco (where you connect to another bus for SML or Portofino) stop not far from the hotel and the Genova Nervi station is nearby.

Thanks FF

Still wavering about the Hotel - the thing is we usually like to stay in smaller, more intimate properties when we visit Italian cities which is the impression we get of the Villa Pagoda - rather than the best Western City which is obviously more centrally located. Have to decide soon! (Thanks also for Airport info.)

Villa Pagoda in Nervi is really wonderful. But consider that it will take you 20 min by taxi to get to the city centre... Nervi has a astonishing long promenade on the sea do not miss a walk at sunset ..also stop for an "aperitivo" at the Chandra Bar which is just on the promenade not far from the train station.

Ciao have a nice time in Genoa

Thanks il mangia

We finally booked Hotel Villa Pagoda - and splashed out on the De luxe suite with a sea view terrace so it's nice to hear that is so nice - we booked 3 nights here and 2 in Portofino to give us some variety.

Don't mind the length of the taxi journeys as long as they are widely available in both Genoa and Nervi and anticipate that we will stay around the Hotel one or two nights in the evening at local restaurants. Can you recommend any?

Will defn. try out the Chandra Bar for an aperitif! (Apparently the Hotel gives guests a key which accesses the promenade directly from the property and this is something that helped us make our minds up.)

The hotel itself should have a very good restaurant.. otherwise I suggest "La Casa dei Capitani"

The address is : Giardini di Quinto- Piazzale Rusca 1 Tel: 010-3727185 prices around 40€

Do not expect Nervi to be too lively at night so consider also to spend one evening in Nervi and the other one in Genoa or somewhere else in the riviera. If you want to surprise your wife with something really special you can go to Camogli by train in the evening just about 5 oclock PM (there is a train station in Nervi)..

..walk around Camogli and at 7 pm go to the Fisherman harbour .. there is a boat departing every 30 min to PUNTA CHIAPPA. (ticket is few €).. land in PUNTA CHIAPPA and walk 5 min left to the restaurant SPADIN. You will never forget it. Just phone to book and to check if the boat is running in the time you are comeing.

Ciao

I suggest you to stay at a more central hotel in Genoa. Ramada Hotel is right on newly nomited UNESCO World Heritage via Balbi, and price is not too high. This hotel would allow you to move on foot around Genoa city centre, which is good considering the traffic and the lack of parking spots in central Genoa! Then from Genoa you can move to Portofino with train and public transportation quite easily (look at www.ferroviedellostato.it for train schedule, in english also).
