Best way Genoa -> Monaco

Hi all, I'm driving down to Genoa in August with at least one other person, we want to go to Monaco for the day and have a few beers so driving is out of the question, so what is the best alternative? train or coach/bus?

Also what are the Safe sites to use for booking in advance please, I've found a couple online but not sure whether they can be trusted!

Thanks in advance for any help,

Marc

There is no bus. For all train times see http://trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html entering Genoa and Monaco. A change of train is necessary in Ventimiglia and the journey takes at least three hours.

For costs, look at Genoa-Ventimiglia on the trenitalia site, then add €3.70 for the French train. Booking online with trenitalia as only possible is far as Ventimiglia and then only if your credit card works on the site.

It is highly unlikely that any train from Genoa to Ventimiglia would be fully booked, though Friday afternoons/evenings and early Saturday mornings in August are a slight possibility, particularly the 13th and 14th. Trains onward from Ventimiglia can never be sold out as seats cannot be reserved. It could be easiest just to buy on the day.

For non-US residents, http://www.tgv-europe.com/ can probably be used to book a through journey on selected faster connections. US residents will be diverted to the Rail Europe site at increased cost.

From Genoa, you do not go to Nice to go to Monaco, Nurioopta!

Thanks perilizia for the links, the first one did'nt allow me to see the Fares so went to the 2nd one and it works out at about 80euros for a return journey, not too bad between two people.

Thing is is it a better or even cheaper option to buy on the day in Genoa? if so then I wont bother ordering online now, thanks

There is almost no difference in price between buying from tgv-europe and buying on the day in Genoa.

But you can save thirty percent on Genoa-Ventimiglia/Ventimiglia-Genoa sections of the journey by buying these in advance on www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html - if the site accepts your credit card (it rejects many). Pick your train then choose the "Meno 30" fare option.

There is no advance purchase reduction ever on the French trains between Ventimiglia and Monaco - you can buy separate tickets for these. in either Genoa or Ventimiglia.

There are also cheaper Regional trains which can be bought on the day in Genoa. The price for these is €9.30 on the day to Ventimiglia (no advance reduction, and fares read NA on the website more than seven days in advance). But in my opinion these trains are too slow for a day trip.
