Cannes to portofino...Can you do a day trip?

Hello,

I would greatly appreciate your input regarding if it is possible to have a daytrip from cannes to portofino. Is there a train? How long would it be? Do we spend the whole day in Portofino or can we squeeze Cinque Terre as well? Any advice as we are a family with 3 kids would be great (14,11,9) Thanks so much!!!

No way. Early morning train connections to Santa Margherita Ligure (nearest station to Portofino, which needs a bus or boat from there) take nearly six hours, and the fastest connections are nearly five hours.

The Cinque Terre are nearly another hour further away.

It's much faster by car - maybe 3.5 hours each way to Portofino, not allowing for rest stops and any traffic problems. But still too far for a day trip with young children.

@perilizia...Thanks so much!! can you recommend a destination worth visiting on the Italian riviera since i will be in cannes and have the time? Something scenic, beautiful and that the kids will enjoy. Not into museums. We are partial to taking the train.

Difficult. Trouble is, the trains from Cannes to Ventimiglia …ter-sncf.com/Images/Paca/Tridion/fiche_04_2… are very slow as they stop at every single tiny station, so it takes you 1.5. hours to get there before you can change onto another train to get further into Italy. Given that, I'm not sure there's anywhere I'd recommend wholeheartedly, as the connection time plus further journey make almost everywhere two to three hours away.

In order of distance from Ventimiglia by train (seven minutes to one hour), maybe look at Bordighera, San Remo, Alassio, Finale Ligure. You could also maybe take a local bus inland to Dolceacqua for an attractive village with castle.

Or simply go as far as Ventimiglia - it's not a great tourist destination, but it's Italy, and has an attractive but somewhat decaying old town high above the river. You could maybe combine it with Monaco which does have things to interest kids (e.g. the shark tanks in the Oceanographic Museum) as a train ticket to/from Ventimiglia allows you to get on and off anywhere as long as you revalidate your ticket each time. If going before September 30, you should buy a Family Pass Isabelle for €35 plus tickets for one child (the pass only allows two children).
