If you already have the rental car then drive. On the other hand, if you are thinking of getting the rental for just the trip to Lugano, then I wiuld take the bus. Rental cars in Italy tend to be expensive because of the mandatory insurance. Also the cost per day is pretty high until you get to week's rental.

If renting a car, then drive to Lugano, and stop at San Mamete, and especially Gandria along the way – Lake Lugano is beautiful!

Ferry to Menaggio – The motorway would require a Swiss Motorway Vignette.

I have the same day trip in mind. Could I ferry from Bellagio to Menaggio, and then ride the train to Lugano? I want to see mountains. Suggestions?

There is no train service on that side of the lake, but there is a bus that runs from Menaggio to Lugano.

Yes Janis B, you would take the SPT C12 Menaggio-Lugano bus.

What's the deal with the vignette? I am planning to do the same from Bellagio with a rental car. Must I purchase the vignette prior to entry into switzerland or may I get it there? Can I get it from the rental car company when I pick up in Milan? Is the ferry from Bellagio a car ferry?

TIA.

Whether you would require a Swiss Motorway Vignette would depend on your route. If you plan to drive the motorway to Lugano, you would purchase the vignette, but if you route via Menaggio, you wouldn’t require the vignette.

What about the drive from Lugano directly to Milan? Is a ignite needed? Where would I obtain one?

Again, it would depend on your route - If you hugged Lake Lugano to Porlezza and drove south along Lake Como, you wouldn't require the Swiss Motorway Vignette, but if you were to drive the motorway from Lugano via Como (town) you would require the vignette.
