Hi

we went to a very good small restaurant in Sirmione and the name is "al troccolo". I know is in the center (wich is not big) but I don't remember anything else and they don't have a website or other.

I don't know how much Italian restaurant are ready for gluten free (the italian term for a person with this problem is "ciliaco" or "allergico al glutine"), and having said that, you can enjpy a lot of grilled fish, meat, and any sort of sausage and salame in Italy are 100% meat,no glutin or wheat.

I was there 3 summers ago and had a memorable meal. Walk across the bridge over the water into the old town. Turn immediately right and walk alongside the water, in 100m or so the street bends to the left and climbs a hill. In 50m on your right, at the end of an old stone building, is a doorway in the wall with a menu displayed. Look through and you will see a terrace with panoramic views across the lake. What a location, and the dishes on the menu are very tempting and very different to those catering for the tourist hordes on the main street. The waiters have aprons down to their ankles so you know it is going to cost.......105 euros fro 2 of us with aperatif, good bottle of wine and coffee. We still talk about that lunch!

Gluten free - can't help. But the Maitre de & waiter spoke good english, so you could check before you are seated.

www.ristorantelarucola.it and www.ristorantesignori

are in my opinion the 2 best restaurants in Sirmione.

Most restaurants ,and certainly the two mentioned above, know what gluten free is and will be happy to assist you with your menu.

Thanks to all of you for your help and advice. We will check out all three restaurants recommended. And thanks for the info regarding wordage - we understand this holiday will be difficult with my allergies but it is great to have your advice. Does anyone have advice as to best travel options (without car) to get from Desenzano Railway to Sirmione, and then on to Venice when we leave??

You have had some good advice already but on another forum someone suggested that you have the Italian translation for gluten allergy written on a card to keep with you if you encounter anyone who doesn't understand you. Have stayed in Sirmione twice and are going back in April but can never remember the name of any restaurants there - will make a note this time! All I know is that we have had several good meals there - it is quite compact and walkable and there are quite a few to choose from - many with outside dining which we like. Regarding getting from your arrival point to Sirmione suggest you contact your accommodation and ask them to price a private transfer - it is not far and should be quite reasonable (we are paying 75 euros one way for 2 people from Verona to Sirmione which is quite a lot further) and you are wise not to have a car for the narrow, narrow streets of Sirmione!
