How are the trains in the summer?

Last year was the first time we took trains to travel in Europe.. In July we took trains in Paris ( to visit Castle Fountainbleau on the outskirts of Paris) and in Amsterdam. They were very hot. There was no air conditioning and there were windows that you could only open about 2 inches from the top in some of the train cars. Some train cars had windows which could not be opened. The heat was unbearable. Is it the same on the trains to and from Milan? If there is no air conditioning, are there windows that you can open more than an inch or 2 from the top? The train rides we took were at least an hour and it was stifling hot on those trains.

As in the countries you mention, it depends on what kind of train you are using. The fast trains between cities are all air conditioned and very comfortable. However, the slow local trains use older rolling stock and may or may not have air conditioning.

The train that we would be on would be from Milan to Varenna. Would that be on an older rail line?

Did this trip in reverse on a pretty hot day. The morning train into Milan was packed and consequently pretty hot. Assume it had a/c.

You`ll be doing the trip in reverse so will miss all the commuters.

The express train had 4 stops and took an hour.

Milan to Varenna uses regionale train rolling stock. The newest railcars all have air conditioning. Many of the older railcars have had a/c retrofitted, although sometimes the a/c breaks down and is not promptly repaired. If you find yourself on a railcar without functioning a/c, move to a different railcar which may have working a/c. All seats on the regionale trains are unreserved, so you're free to move around the train (in the same class of service) at your will.
