Train and Taxi Strikes

I am aware there are occasional train strikes in Italy. Is there much warning of these so that a rental car can be book? Do the strikes only affect the local trains, or would express trains be affected too, such as Milan to Venice? The trains to the airport? Same question for the taxi strikes. Is there notice, or are you suddenly caught out? Are either strike more likely on a week day, weekend, or holiday?

It depends on the strike - some relate to a specific region and so don't affect long-distance trains, some are "general" and therefore affect other means of transport also. Trains to the airport are equally likely to be concerned, although there are usually private bus alternatives. Notice is given (see http://www.summerinitaly.com/planning/strike.asp), but many strike notices end up being withdrawn so do not necessarily result in a strike. I've not yet encountered a taxi strike but imagine these could take place without as much notice.

It really isn't possible to make the sort of predictions of probability that you would like to...! Although you can probably bet on French air-traffic controllers being on strike some time in August and mucking up the whole of Europe's airspace!

Unfortunately here in Italy you book your ticket and take the risk of there being a strike! Normally a few days notice are given.
