Question about Zermatt to Milan on a Swiss Transfer Ticket

We are planning a trip to Zermatt and flying into Zurich on a Friday. Looking into buying a Swiss Transfer Ticket. Looks like we will not have any issue from Zurich Airport to Zermatt. HOWEVER, we plan on going from Zermatt to Milan Centrale and it is not a border town in Switzerland. Does this mean we have to buy another ticket from Brig to Milan? If so, is this the most economical way - Swiss Transfer Ticket + Brig-Milan Ticket. Or, is there a more economical way of doing this? Also, should we buy this in advance for savings? And if we have to buy an extra ticket, do we buy this in Zermatt prior to boarding or do we buy this on the train to Milan?

1. Re: Question about Zermatt to Milan on a Swiss Transfer Ticket

The border town for the purposes of the transfer ticket is Domodossola in Italy.

Because of advance reductions, it may be cheapest to buy from Domodossola to Milano Centrale now on www.trenitalia.com - click the British flag at the top first for English, and book the exact train that you intend to take from Brig (or Visp) to avoid having to change trains. Tickets include a mandatory seat reservation.

If you want, you can buy in Zermatt. You cannot buy a ticket on the train.
