You can take the train from Milano Centrale to Varenna (the station is actually called Varenna-Esino), which is at the most scenic part of the lake, the journey takes around an hour and costs 6.45 euro each way. it's about a ten minute downhill walk to the lake front. It is a regional train and you can't buy tickets in advance.

Varenna itself is beautiful but, if you wished, you could take a ferry across to Bellagio which is bigger with more shops and restaurants. However, I don't know whether or not they will all be open in April - the scenery will still be gorgeous, anyway. The ferry ride takes roughly 10-15 minutes.

Hope this helps.

Is there a way to get to Lake Como from Malapensa airport to Lake Como or do you have to start in Milano Central?

You have to take a train from Malpensa airport (note the spelling) to Milan Central and change there for a train to Varenna or Como San Giovanni station. Or you can take a train towards Milan Cadorna, getting off at Saronno to change for a train to Como Lago station.

Trains from Malpensa Aeroport to Saronno (for Como Lago) are often heading for Milano Centrale rather than Milano Cadorna - it could be either, depending on your departure time.

Look for the routing from Malpensa to Sarrono with a short wait for another train to Como Lago.
