Milan For Two Nights In September

This question is for all of you northern Italy experts. We will be driving from Switzerland to Northern Italy with a two night stay in the Milan area. We are nervous about driving our car in Milan and are thinking of some alternatives. We are thinking about staying in Monza at the Hotel de la Ville and then taking a train or taxi into Milan. We are also considering hiring a private driver for one day in the city as well. Does anyone have some good ideas as to what we should do? We obviously want to see the sites of Milan without having to drive into the city. We welcome any and all replies.

Another alternative may be leaving the car in one of the parkings outside the center and use the public transports that are really efficient or choose one of the hotel with parking facilities.

Hotel de la Ville in Monza is close to the beautiful park but not the best solution to reach Milan in a comfortable and fast way.

Thanks for your reply. I was somewhat concerned that the trip from Monza would be too much but we did not want to risk driving in Milan. Do you have any specifics on the area for parking outside the city center? We have done similar in Salzburg a couple of years ago.

We found that the train ride into Milan from Como (a much smaller town) was easy and less than an hour, and hotels are usually cheaper in Como than Milan (especially if there is a big trade show in Milan at the time of your arrival). Plus, you could take the ferry around to see the beautiful villages along the lake while staying in Como. Train goes from Como San Giovanni station to Milano Centrale station.

Actually we will be staying in Bellagio for four nights as well but don't want to venture to Milan from there. We would prefer to stay in Milan area but have a driver or take taxi or train to avoid traffic in Milan. Still looking for some ideas.

The DoubleTree Hotel at Via Ludovico di Breme 77, Milan, 20156, Italy TEL: 39-02-928831 has parking and is closer by tram to the town center. The hotel is in a quiet area of town with residences and industries. The main advantage here is it is a very good hotel, clean, quiet with good parking and yet just a short tram ride to most of the places you will like to see in Milan. I haven't driven there but you do not have to go through town to get there since it is easily accessible to the highway. …hilton.com/en/…index.html

Hi, you don't need a driver in Milan, it's a very small city and most things to visit are around the Duomo area, if you're driving from Bellagio, you could stay at the Hilton at the Central station and they have a garage because it's easy to get to, it's a straight drive down Viale Zara to the Piazzale Agosta roundabout, take the Via Pola road, straight on to Via Galvani, the Hilton is on the left.

The actual driving in the city is only about 5 minutes from the roundabout to the Hilton so you won't get stuck in traffic.

I guess I think of Milan as a large city and as we are getting older, we did not want to have a problem driving in a busy city. Thanks for your ideas. Still have not decided. I hope I mentioned that we would be arriving from the North as we would be driving from Switzerland if that helps.
