Milan Day Trip Advice

Hi,

My wife and I will be in Milan from 13 August through 18 August. We intend to go to Lake Como for a day trip (self guided) and on the scenic railway to Switzerland for a day trip (also self guided). However we've just noticed that we will be staying during Ferragosto and a Sunday. Which days would be best to do our day trips whilst still having days to see Milan and shop? Our concern is that on Sundays and public holidays the public transport options may be very limited for our day trips while shopping and food options may be limited if we use those days to see Milan itself.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

While the train timetable for Sundays and public holidays (both covered by "festivi" in Italian timetables) may differ from the weekday schedule, it is rarely "very limited" for mainline trains in N. Italy.

For example, from Milano Centrale to Como S. Giovanni on a weekday, you have hourly or 2-hourly direct trains (08:10, 09:10, 11:10) and on a Sunday - exactly the same.

I don't know which specific departures you might mean by "scenic railway to Switzerland" so you will have to check that for yourself, using a current date falling on Sunday, on e.g. http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en - or trenitalia.

The main problem with doing your day trips on a Sunday/public holiday is that the locals, and other tourists, may well be doing the same.

Nor are Regional trains much if any reduced, except that Ferragosto trains run on a Sunday service rather than a weekday service. On Ferragosto last year, there were trains every two hours from Milano Centrale to Varenna, and hourly or better from Milano Nord Cadorna to Como Nord Lago on the lakeside.

Don't worry about 15th August in Milan: now, with the crisis, the city is crowded and last year, for exemple, some museums were free
