How far in advance do you need to buy train tickets?

We (two people) are going to be traveling in September. We have plans of landing in Milan (MXP airport) and going to Lake Como area. Perhaps someone could help me out with the details as I am a bit lost.

Couple of questions:

1- Which train station do we need to get to for travel to Como?

2- How far in advance do we need to buy out ticket from Milan to Como?

-- Obviously we will be coming off an international flight and don't want to wait around too long for the train however also don't want to get a ticket so soon in case we have baggage issues etc.

Where and how would people suggest going about doing this leg of our trip?

Thanks so much!

1. If you want to get to Como, take a train from Malpensa towards Milan Cadorna station. Get off at Saronno and change to a train to Como Lago. If you want to get to the mid-lake towns, take a train from Malpensa to Milan Cental and change there for a train to Varenna. From there, you can take a short ferry ride to Bellagio and other mid-lake towns.

2. Buy the tickets when you arrive at the train station at Malpensa. They are all local trains with no seat reservations and no advance purchase discounts.

You may wish to view the Trenord Railway map.

The train from Lecco runs along the east side of the lake.

We are going to be staying in the city of Como. So I assume the recommendations of Malpensa towards Milan Cordona station then connecting with Como Lago is what we would need to do.

Yes. Although the trains which stop at Saronno are also (and more often) trains to Milano Centrale - don't choose a train by the final destination, just make sure that it's calling at Saronno on the way.

So to confirm. From airport take train to Saronno....then Saronno to Como Lago? Correct?

Thank you so much for the help!

We did this exact trip (and encountered a couple from Atlanta doing the same thing). Our wait in Saronno was about 10-15 minutes and we were at Como Lago Nord in about an hour total. The cost was about 12 euros as I recall.
