Day trips from Turin?

We're thinking of vising Turin in March. We know Milan isn't far away (and may stay a few nights there separately), but what else is convenient to do outside of hte city? (We're there for close to a week, and have a toddler to keep happy!) Thanks!

deepeenside,

Thank you for your information. I, too, will be traveling to Torino and will be looking for a day trip. You have given me a place to start looking. Any more suggestions for late April?

While "browse...for a guide book"' may be good advice for the big 3 /4/5 (Rome, Florence, Venice, Naples, CT), it doesn't work for every place. I am sitting here with 3 "big name" guide books and only Frommer's even mentions a day trip from Torino, Cogne. Rick Steves doesn't even mention Torino at all.

inside the city don't miss "mole antonelliana" with it's international cinema museum, the historical baroque citycenter, the "monte dei cappuccini" by night. in April don't miss the nightlife in "quadrilatero romano" quarter very suggestive and good for "apericena" (something like happy hour).

in the suburbs I suggest "La Reggia di Venaria" in Venaria, "Palazzina di caccia" in Stupinigi.

about half an hour from turin you can find some beautiful castles and historical palaces in the "county" called Canavese.

about one hour away you can visit:

1 - "Valle di Susa", with beautiful castles and lots of alpine villages/small town stage of the Turin 2006 Olimpic Winter Games like Sestriere (very very exclusive place), Claviere, Bardonecchia.

2 - Langhe -> towns known for it's fine cuisine and wines (you can chose Alba if you like truffle, Bra for fine meat and cheese, Barolo or Roero or Dogliani for the tipical wines called as the place)

if you have specific passion like architecture, arts and so on let me know. I'll suggest something that is worth... non only what you can read on web/guides.

bye

Deepeenside,

Thanks so much for the personal reply. I do know how to Google information but I prefer the personal touch. Are the places you are recommending reachable by public transportation?

I'm glad you mentioned the Olympic venue. SLC was the host city before Torino and I'd like to see and compare some of the places. We have an Olympic memory park set up and many memorials to the Olympics.

I'll be staying close to Piazza Veneto. I had a rough time finding a place. Lots of places were booked already.

all places can be reached by public transportation by train/bus. but I can't help further cause I don't use public transports at all.

"Piazza Vittorio Veneto" is lovely you are in the citycenter very good choice ;) it's near

Piazza Castello and Palazzo Madama and Giardini Reali

Gran Madre temple similar to Pantheon in Rome

Monte dei cappuccini for night panorama

Murazzi del Po for nightlife (dance)

Quadrilatero Romano for nightlife (happy hour)

Mole Antonelliana with international museum of cinema

Piazza San Carlo and Via Roma (for good shopping)

all of this reachable by feet
