Ideal stopover between Milan and Lyon by rail

We were planning to train direct Milan to Lyon, however we understand that the only one train per day, arrives at Lyon St Exuper at 21.25 and still requires other transport to get into Lyon city.

As we are not keen on arriving in an unfamiliar city late at night, we are considering a stopover on the way. It doesn't matter if it is not on the direct route, but can anyone suggest a good town to stay for a night and look around.

It is looking like we could split the trip at Turin, however we are open to any suggestions that depart Milan and eventually arrive in Lyon during daylight.

Thank you

There's a direct train to Lyon St Exupery Aeroport at 06.00 as well.

However to get to Lyon itself (Lyon Part Dieu station) it is actually both faster and cheaper to get the 8.50 TGV train from Milan to Chambery and change to a TER train to Lyon there, than it is to go to Lyon St Exupery and take the expensive express tram for 30 minutes into Part Dieu.
