Starting the AV1

I'm dropping a car at the Bolzano airport and then want to go to either Dobbacio or Lago Bries to start the AV1. Train or bus option? Recommendation for small quaint stay either in Bolzano or dobaccio?

Since Bozen/Bolzano is a larger city, most "quaint" stays will be outside the city. I would recommend dropping the car after your stay in Bozen, then taking the train to Toblach/Dobbiaco. You stay can be booked at the official South Tyrol site at suedtirol.info/en/…Search-Accomodations.html. Search for Bed and Breakfast or Holidays on a farm.

If this is not an option, take the train north as far as Klausen/Chiusa and stay there for the night before going on to Toblach. Klausen is a small town dominated by a convent on the hill. It has narrow streets and a very quaint atmosphere with nice restaurants and cafes.

In either case, the train to Toblach is your best option. It gives you nearly the same panorama as the bus but faster, more comfotable and without the curvy roads and traffic.
