Bergamo to where???????

Got a cheapy flight to Bergamo, too good to miss but although not skiers and not necessarily hikers, we love to see what scenery countries have to offer from the comfort of a car, so plan to stay one nigh in Bergamo Alta (sounds lovely) then head to Valle d'Aosta from there we have 3 nights to base ourselves SOMEWHERE to see Mont Black, Matterhorn and the spectacular views - can anyone suggest a great base and also would Lake Como be too far to go, never been to any of the Italian Lakes and would like a glimpse if not too far. We love driving so no problem spending hours in a car. Look forward to all the tips.

Many thanks

Consider Bergamo Alta for your last night and since you will be passing in the vicinity of the lakes to get to Aosta, spend your first night on the lakes. Depending on your time of arrival, you could stay on Lakes Como (if arriving later) or Maggiore, and even Orta.

Aosta (right on the A5) make the most sense as a base. From Aosta, you can easily tour Mont Blanc and the valleys up to Monte Rosa.

Hotel Milleluci would be a good accommodation.

If you only focused on Mont Blanc, Entreves (right at the base of Mont Blanc!) would be your hamlet! Chamonix, France is just over the mountain!

THanks for your reply and just noticed all my spelling mistakes, must be the Italian Wine, like to get in the mood for the research. Any more tips gratefully accepted. When hiring a car in Italy is there no restriction on going over to France/Switzerland?

Prego!

You would need to tell your rental agency that you intend to also visit France and Switzerland.

If you plan to drive to Switzerland you must buy a Motorway Sticker, Vignette (pass)for the windscreen. These can be purchased at custom posts or post offices. If you do not display a 'Vignette' your hire car may well be fined. The rental car should have this if you have informed them that you will be entering Switzerland.
