Place for a Picnic?

My recollection of Venice (it's been many years since I've been) is that there is not a lot of green space - not surprising. But can anyone recommend an area where we might be able to have a little picnic? Also, any suggestions of where to get some nice wine and food nearby for our picnic? We'll be there in August, so if there is some place with a little shade where we could sit and perhaps escape the heat a little, that would be ideal. Thanks!!

NOt many places and not many benches either . Giardini as been said. Or the parks at St Alvise or the Guglie. Unless you are on Murano and you have a massive park ! There are small supermarkets / shops dotted over Veniec where you can get cheese, bread wine etc . However ytou might find it just as reasonable to buy a few tramezzini ( over stuffed sandwiches) or cicetti and one of the many bars and enjoy the local atmosphere.

My favourite picnic spot is Campo San Pietro - the only campo in Venice that has grass. There are also trees and benches. A bit of a walk from the centre of Venice but what a scenic walk! Also you can buy the food for the picnic when you are almost there - in Via Garibaldi where there are lots of shops plus a boat selling fruit. Enjoy but don't tell anyone else!

Thanks for all the suggestions! Robert-J, is it just the campos where picnics are not allowed, or also in the parks? We certainly don't want to be doing something that is frowned upon.

Read the rules and see the map of the picnic area near St. Mark (close to Valleresso water bus stop) here: …venezia.it/flex/…16027

Basically, if there is a public bench eating is ok.

It is the ugly show of historical places turned into a picnic area and full of litter that they ant to avoid...

Thanks for that link, Francesco. Valuable information to know. I hate to think that people would be leaving their garbage about, or worse still throwing it in the canals! We of course would be completely respectful of the environment, and I'm glad to know of the Giardini ex Reali as a potential spot for our picnic.
