A La Bricola charges $10 for a coke

In Venice you will find beautiful historic sites that are more than fantastic! But you will also find increadable crowds so much so that you feel like you are in Disneyland and not Italy.

But the most dissapointing thing you will find is that some eating establishments will charge outlandish prices for drinks. A La Bricola is just off San Marco Piazza at San Marco 475-6. Its a medium to low prices rest with not very memorable food. THey charge 7 euros for a coke and then same for water and 12 euros for a glass of house wine or beer. So for two people you can easily double your bill without knowing it.

I realise that this is a tourist town but when locals take advantage of travelers like this you cant help thinking that one visit is enough.

I speak Italian and work for an Italian company and when I relay this to natives who live in the region they all say in Italian what is the equivalent to "big ripoff" and "that's why I never eat there" or "its only for tourists stay away".

Italy is beautiful and the people are in general wonderful so dont let these type of ripoffs stop you from going and enjoying this magical place!

You will read all the time on this forum, that to eat and drink in the San Marco are is very expensive, and not particulaly good value, best to get away from that area when in comes to food,

Those prices are scandalous. Thanks for the heads up. The best thing is for people to avoid those places. I will point out that my wife had a cup of hot chocolate and I a cup of tea at Florians. Our bill was over $30.us. We were aware of the prices when we sat down and it was a one time thing. Glad we did it but probably will not repeat the experience.

The advice given so frequently on this Forum is beware the very high prices in and around Piazza San Marco. This is the heart of "Tourist Venice" and, lovely though the place may be, you are paying an extortionate mark up for the ambience.

Just walk away into Cannaregio or down the length of Via Garibaldi into Castello or across the Grand Canal into Dorsoduro or San Polo and find a more peaceful but just as beautiful part of Venice with fewer tourists where prices are sensible.

I was able to avoid the overpriced areas in Venice, by eating and drinking away from San Marco and the Rialto bridge. Very easily done.

I did, however, get ripped off big time on my return trip home. Surprise . . . not in Venice, but JFK Airport in NYC where I paid $9 for a beer, $11 for a mixed drink, and $5 for a coke. You can get ripped off anywhere if you let your guard down.

Am I missing something here? Fred is just giving his opinion and he says Italy is beautiful. There are places that rip you off (thats the same wherever you travel). Differing opinions are welcome here ,are they not.

Definately,

Notably ,humour, irony, and quips are good tools in any review. There has been a steely determination and one man campaign on a number of other venice forums from FredCarolina- which hopefully have received a fair hearing with balancing views...

To quote Wilde; "Arguements are to be avoided. They are always vulgar and often convincing"

Amongst all this, there is also useful info for the next visitor to Venice..

PS.

By the way Travelrrr..

The reference to Vence was also a light hearted comment about the previous forum that was pulled by TA yesterday. You need to have seen all the strands together to get the full picture..
