Italy does not have a well developed long distance bus/coach network. The best and cheapest will be by train from Rome Termini to Venice Santa Lucia station. See www.trenitalia.it for timetables. The journey takes around 4 hours 30 minutes, passing through Florence, Bologna and Ferrara

If you buy your tickets a day or so beforehand from the Rome station and reserve seats, you should be able to purchase a family ticket which will reduce the cost substantially.

It takes about 4. 1/2 hours, but I would think by train, Italian trains are reasonable and reliable, but I dont know the cost, long distance coach travel is not an option in Italy, it would be quicker to fly, but both Cities Airports are out of Town where the Railway Stations are central,

Hello. Train is, as has been said, just under 4.5 hours.

Door to door, I think this beats the plane and is more pleasant.

The Familia ticket on Tren Italia is for a group of 3-5 people with at least one person under 12.

I did a random search using four adults and one under 12. I selected a Eurostar [fast Italian train - not to be confused with London - Paris/Brussels trains] journey, which is the most expensive and quickest.

Result was € 298 one way 1st Class.

Here's the Tren Italia website [English button top right]:

http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/

Here's the details of the Familia discount:

FAMILIA OFFER

Trains allowed

TBiz, AV, ES*, ES*city, IC plus, IC, ICN, Express trains, couchette cars and WL.

Discounts

Family: 50% for children of up to 12 years, 20% for the other persons for groups from 3 to 5 persons, among whom at least one is a aged less than 12 and an adut. They can be bought only if the amount payable, net of the discount, is at least 10 Euro for each travelling person older than 12 years. In any case, subject to the minimum fares for each tariff.

On board the train, Family tickets must be shown together with an identification document or, for children younger than 12, a birth certificate or similar document, together with serf-certification of the parent/guardian.

Booking change

Can be made twice from issue date until the train's departure time, for the places available under the chosen Family offer and for trips to be made within two months from the original booking, at any ticket office or travel agency, using the self service machines, on this website or by phoning the Call Center 89.20.21*. The same procedure applies also to the Ticketless tickets, in which case the change is only allowed with the ticketless procedure without the possibility of printing the card ticket.

The booking change is free.

Agencies may charge a commission for this service.

If there are no places available for the Family offer chosen, the change can be made by returning the tickets (ticket change).

Ticket change

This can be done only once by paying 20% of the price of the returned ticket, up to a maximum of 3 euro, from the issue date until the train's departure and at any ticket office or travel agency.

The change of the ticket bought on this site is not possible online and it is possible only for amounts that are the same or higher. To obtain it, you must first pick up the printed ticket or, for ticketless tickets, go directly to the station ticket desks or issuing agency

Travelling on another train

This is allowed, subject to ticket validation and by paying 8.00 euro and and of the difference between the full price for the train used and the amount already paid for using a train of the same or different type or different class or service on the departure date of the train booked and up until three hours afterwards also after this period if taking the first train available of the same or lower category for arriving at the destination

In cases of use on different days, travellers are considered as being without a ticket

The ticket must be stamped before boarding; if this is not done, the passenger will be liable for a fine of 8 euro (this being added to any other fine applied for having boarded a different train). Holders of ticketless tickets are not allowed to board Regional trains and if found on such trains, will be dealt with as if they had no ticket at all.

Refund

Possible until the train's departure time with 20% deduction charge. Refunds for printed tickets can only be requested from the ticket desks or from the issuing travel agency. No refunds are allowed if the refundable amount, net of deductions, is equal to or less than 8 euro. Refunds for journey interruption are not allowed.

If the ticket has not yet been picked up or has been bought using the ticketless system, it is possible - before departure only - to request the refund by using the "on-line refund" service on this site (only for refunds of the full purchase) by calling Trenitalia's Call Center or by e-mail, by sending an e-mail to rimborsi@trenitalia.it. After the pick up (not applicable for ticketless tickets), you must make the request at any station ticket counter, which will forward it to the appropriate Office.

Refunds are made by re-credit on the credit card used for the purchase.

For ticketless tickets bought from travel agencies, refunds can be requested only before departure from the issuing agency or at a station ticket desk; alternatively, during agency closure times by phoning the Trenitalia Call Center on 892021, which will authorise the travel agency to make the refund at a later time. The refund will be made subject to the customer's showing a photocopy of an ID document

And finally here's some guidance about booking with Tren Italia from the brilliant British Seat61 site: seat61.com/…20Italy

Sorry to be a pain, but forgot to say, if you book through Tren Italia they like Italian city names - so it's Roma to Venezia.
