Book over there or pre-book?

Hi I am looking to book a trip to Venice for a weekend break. Could anyone give me some advice on my dilema which is as follows- fly out andbook a hotel over there on the hope that it will be cheaper?or pre book hotel and flight?

I'm am looking for a hotel within walking distance to the sights and bustle if that helps. Could anyone recommend an area or hotel also which airport to go?

Thanks

Where you stay in Venice is not too important, Venice is really not big, but do book in advance, you will not get,a better deal by waiting and could waste lot of time looking,
