It depends on when you will be there, and what you are planning on doing. If you qualify for the Rolling Venice Card for €4+3day tourist travel card at €18, that is definitely the most advantageous deal (you must be 14 to 29 years old to purchase them, in Venice).

Really a good idea to get a Guide Book, something simple like DK Venice Top Ten, will give a good idea of what is on offer and what would appeal to you

Natural beauty is there, in abundance (northern lagoon, the Adriatic sea, the islands) but the most significant parts of Venice are probably more tied to its role as a Republic and international power through, and after, the Renaissance, so the things that you cannot find anywhere else are tied to that: the Doge's Palace, Ca' Rezzonico and Querini Stampalia, the Grand Canal, etc.

36 hours is not much time. Doges Palace ,St. Marks. The best way is to get a Vap. pass for 24 hrs. say and stop at as many places that interest you. You may like articture more than museums. If you don't pre book sites wait could and probably will be an hour or more. at the most popular museums.

Just wonder the side streets and the differtent areas this is the real Venice.
