Venice trip report.
Let me start with I love Venice! It been over thirty years since I've been and I remembered little. We arrived by train from Verona (another lovely city). Lugging luggage isn't my favorite thing so we jumped on a water taxi and were off caught up immediately into the magic. Our hotel al ponte antico is right on the canal by the rialto bridge. Such a beautiful 700 old building. Very small with only 9 rooms. Very friendly helpful staff. Happy to be here. We wandered off to explore the San palo area. Picked up a church pass and visited several pretty churches including San palo, and s maria glorious a dei Frari. We passed many pretty campos along the way and just made it back as the heavens opened up with a huge rain storm. We sat on our fabulous deck . We had thought our topa boat tour was for this day but after a few frantic emails realized we were safe as it was for tomorrow. We feared that the rain would never end but lightning over the bridge is quite the sight to see. But by 7 the sun returned and we wandered off to eat at Antico dolo which had typical venetian food. Good but not sooooo special.
The next day we enjoyed breakfast on the terrace and then headed off to st marks square expecting the worst. Having a reservation allowed us to enter the line to st marks immediately. I love this place!!! We had to backtrack to get up to the logge (5 e) to see the hourses and the view but well worth it. Happily we went to our 10:45 secret itinerary tour. We got the guide from hell but the tour is great. We wandered around a bit more following the tour and headed over to the Correr museum which had an excellent Klimt exhibit. We walked over to the traghetto stop and crossed the canal to the Guggenheim museum. That was a bargain ride 50 cents! After the art we went to Barnaba square to check out an apartment a friend is renting for July and August. Very nice!! I wish I could get back over to visit. After Ice cream from Grom ( my fav) we heading home across the Academia bridge. Just a little lost. Was planning on taking another traghetto but this one seemed to close at noon? Oh well! Our topa boat tour driver Giancarlo showed up right on time and took us through the canals big and small. Two hours of fun including getting stopped by the police for a control check. He dropped us off at our dinner restaurant la zucca. This used to be a Vegetarian restaurant but now has gone over to the dark side and serves meat as well. We were meeting a friend of a friend so got to hear about life from a locals perspective. Fun night good food!
Our last day was for the ghetto tour in the Cannaregio. loved this area and the tour of the synagogues. Stopped by a very pretty church on the way called the St Maria Miracoli. The tour was excellent given on the half hour. Lunch at Gan Gan the only kosher restaurant was great. Falafel! Bought some pretty glass beads. Then we bought a vappereto pass and caught a boat to the Cemetery . Never found the famous graves but enjoyed walking around. Then caught the 41 back to town and changed to the 1 for the grand very slow tour of the canal. Boats were too crowded. BY this time we were so glad to return home to sip presecco on the terrace before dinner. Nap was useful too! Ai Mercanti was for tonight. Dinner was good not the feast I'd hoped for but quite nice. I'm afraid we leave tomorrow. I am very sad to leave Venice but Barcelona is next.
