Just returned home and a word of thanks

Back from a wonderful, short visit in mid-October and want to thank all of the regular contributors on this forum for all their tips and advice in response to others’ questions. We could not have planned our visit without your help. A couple of comments for others planning a trip:

1. We booked a shared water taxi transfer from airport to our hotel near S. Vio on the Venicelink site. It was one of the highlights of our visit (arriving on a bright sunny morning helped) and even at E 27/person, worth the cost in terms of convenience and fun.

2. The “Secret Itineraries” tour at the Doge’s palace was terrific – not only an interesting tour, but also a chance to learn about the history of Venice and the palace in a small group in a quiet setting, before joining the mad crush of the crowds pushing their way through the public rooms of the palace.

3. We stayed in Dorsoduro and loved it. Returning to our hotel late in the evening from dinner along almost deserted streets and canals in a light mist, with a stop on the Accademia Bridge for the view, was truly magical. This is a completely different Venice from the over crowded, somewhat shabby strip running between the station and Rialto and San Marco.

4. As all the regulars repeat over and over on this forum: check out the main tourist sites, but be sure also to spend lots of time away from the crowds just wandering around. And forget about your map – it won’t help you much anyway!

Hi Robocat,

I also was in Venice for 4 nights 29th Sept onwards. We did stay two bridges east of Piazza S. Marco and it almost drove us mad, with the amount of crowds in the area (mind you we were tourists also) as we had come down from the Dolomites and Lake Garda where it was very relaxing...however I agree

The Secret Itineraries Tour we both really enjoyed and once the tour guide turned the key in the lock we were mesmerised by the tales of times goneby and found the rooms unbelievable, including the beams in the roof...such a difference when we stepped across the ornate staircase to the luxury of the palace...

To get away from the hustle and bustle we went by vaporetto via Murano to quiet little Burano one afternoon. So beautiful and picturesque and enjoyed lunch on the canal there with a singing waiter. Then we also went over to Lido to browse the shops there and kick back in a nice outdoor restaurant...which was mainly one of our great aims...try all the local cuisines on our travels and slow dine throughout Italy!

Boy my clothes shrunk in the wash over there! Ha!

We never had trouble finding our way around as we just looked as stated for the main Piazzas and head in that direction...plus knew the areas of the island which helped.

At least now I can say I've been to Venice...missed it last time.

Thanks for your report and glad you enjoyed your trip, I prefer Venice in the winter months there's something magical about the misty dark nights.

How was there weather? I plan on going to Venice next year on Sept 29, and staying 3 nights.

Hi SirNupe

We were there arriving on the 29th Sept and stayed 4 nights just past...the weather was light rain on and off the first afternoon and the next day which made Venice rather grey including the canals and then on the third day a higher tide forced water up through the drains in St Mark's Square where there were intermittent puddles and it pooled around and into the Basilica where we were to have a Skip the line and walking tour of Venice...hence we only had platforms to get inside the Basilica. Once out of there the day became overcast with intermittent sunshine and Venice put on quite a show with lovely blue green water in the canals and plenty of colour in the gondolas and the buildings when the sun came through..after the tour we went over to Burano and was that a picture perfect island and a lovely day...the next day we went to Lido to have a repast from the hordes of tourists and the day was misty and overcast but not raining. It was rather warm while there and we lived in sandals and 3/4 pants, short sleeve T shirts during the day.
