Tipping Gondolier

Do gondoliers expect to be tipped when taking tourists on gondola rides? If so, how much should you tip?

No, you pay them €80. Why would you tip them as well?

It is never necessary to tip anyone for anything in Italy.

Thank you for your quick reply. Another question, is that 80 euros per ride or per person? It's going to be my first trip to Venice, and I'm researching all I can. Thanks.

Per ride, up to 6 people and during the day, for 40 minutes. From another thread running, it seems like not all gondoliers necessarily adhere to the time or cost so best to negotiate in advance.

Note, the price is the same for 1-6 people but you don't have to share with strangers unless you want to to reduce the cost per head.

I always think if you get good service and you have had enjoyment out of something e.g a tour or a trip then it can be nice to tip. Its by no means obligatory or expected like in the USA but nevertheless appreciated.

Voluntary tipping for excellence drives down base prices and increases quality in the long run for future visitors, to the benefit of all, and being voluntary, to the harm of none.

Each gondolier is their own boss and they all have jobs in a monopoly that ensures that they are set for life. I would never tip a gondolier.

Gondoliers cannot up the official rates ...the rates are established by the council.
