Gondolas do not have to be booked they are used as a leisure ride, not transport from A to B. there are Gondola stations in the tourist areas of Venice , this is the Tariff./

look for Hotels in Mestre closest to Port for Ship departure...there is bus & train service from Marco Polo Airport to Mestre

Abt 5 Euro for the bus & perhaps 7 Euro for the train..

Try to stayat a hotel within walking distance of the Mestre station, you can also pick up a bus into downtown Venice from there...perhaps a 20 minute ride & take a tram to the ship port.

Hotels can advise you if there are direct busses to the Port

There are many hotels in Mestre, but book early & use the free cancellation booking....you usually have up to 3 days to cancel without penalty

booking.com site is excellent...we use that site all the time.

Hope this helps...we were just there Oct 2012

The Marco Polo Airport is about eight miles from Mestre/Venice.

You can prearrange for a transfer.

There are no trains from the airport as would seem to be written in post 2, and the bus costs 6 euros, not 5.

If you were to take the train into Venice from the mainland, you would need to reach Piazzale Roma with luggage (walking either to the vaporetto and then one stop away, or walking over the Calatrava bridge all the way to Piazzale Roma and then to the People Mover entrance in the back corner) and then take the monorail "People Mover" one stop to the entrance of the port and then walk to the ship from there.

Were you to stay on the mainland, you might be better off catching a bus to Piazzale Roma directly, as from the train station area it usually takes about 20 minutes or so anyway.

From the airport to the mainland and from the mainland to the port there are "normal" land taxi cabs which operate on the roads (which in Venice don't exist beyond Piazzale Roma and the port areas).
