Venice: what to do with the rental car??

My husband and I are looking for a place to stay in Venice in mid-May, but it´s being a difficult task to find out where the best area is because we will be driving to Venice...

Can anybody give us a suggestion of a budget hotel or B&B?

Thank you so much!!

It does not matter much where you stay. You have to park your car at the edge of Venice and take public transport to your hotel.

There is very expensive parking at Piazzale Roma, at the end of the road into Venice, and expensive parking at Tronchetto, signed to the right at the end of the bridge from the mainland. Both of these have vaporetto stops for easy transport to the rest of Venice. There is also moderately priced parking next to the train station at Mestre, on the mainland, and there are frequent trains from there to the main Santa Lucia station.

In addition to Nick's suggestions there is another option. Take your car on the ferry to Lido. From memory it was around 30 euros each way for car and 2 passengers. There are many hotels in Lido with car parking and the vaporetto takes around 15 mins to St Marks. Lido is actually quite a nice area, relatively quiet, with plenty of restaurants. Villa Casanova is a cheap, good B&B with free parking.

Can you not drop the car off and then pick another up ?

Often venice airport parking has special offiers on kt s car parks ( like€8 a day) which could be worth looking into.
