train travel from mestre, venice to verona

we are travelling from mestre, venice to verona and wondered if it's advisable to book train tickets in advance, or can one buy tickets at the station.

Also, if we decide to buy online, where do we do that? Thanks

if you want to take one of the fast Frecciabianca trains with reserved seats taking about an hour, you can buy on the day for the base price of €23, or if booking in advance you might be able to buy for as little as €9.

Alternatively you can take a Regionale or Regionale Veloce train with no reserved seats, journey times from one hour 20 minutes, and pay €7.50 on the day - no point in buying these in advance.

See www.trenitalia.com for journeys from Venezia Mestre to Verona Porta Nuova, clicking the UK flag first for English and entering the 'hour' of departure, e.g. '13' for 13.00.

When I took the Regionale from Mestre to Verona, I bought my ticket a half-hour before the train departed.

As Perlizia pointed out, you can save quite a bit by not taking a fast train. An extra twenty minutes is a small price to pay for big savings.

Once you get to the Porta Nuova train station in Verona, you can easily walk from the station to the center of the city.

thanks, it might be better to take the high speed train. Does a person have to book in advance for that?

You don't need to book in advance if you are willing to pay the full price ticket, otherwise booking early (as early as 120 days prior) could land you with very cheap fares.

If you don’t want to book a high-speed train in advance or pay the higher fare, just take an early Regionale—at 7:47 a.m., for example, which will get you to Verona at 9:45 a.m.

Return trip take the 7:18 p.m. Regionale Veloce from Verona Porta Nuova that gets you back to Mestre at 8:42 p.m.

You would have around nine hours in Verona to explore the city.

Each one-way trip will cost €7.50.
