Don't buy the 12/24/36 hour etc water bus tickets. Venice is easy to walk. Pay the small amount for the single voyage from the train to the island. Orientate yourself on foot, then decide if you need the multi tickets.

Boats are efficient and other than big crowds at train arrival times, they work well.

The Venice travel card really is good value not everyone wants to walk everywhere all the time, ONE off Vaporetto rides are very expensive at €7. a train does not come into it,

I honestly couldn't disagree more, we bought a 72 hour ticket, used it lots and thought travelling by vaporetto to be good fun and the multi day tickets good value. As with any public transport system, avoid rush hours if you can.

3. Re: Transport

If somebody is here for 3 days arriving at the station and are planning on going to the islands then the pass is well worth it . I agree that for 24 hrs it might be worth waiting . But overall they are convenient especially if you go against the day tripper traffic and the vaporetti are not so packed.

It really-really depends on an individual. We bought multi-day vaporetto passes in the past and barely used them, since we are major walkers. So, last time we did not buy a pass and did not take one single vaporetto the entire week of our stay, criss-crossing Venice daily without a problem. However, I have friends who take vaporetto even for short journeys due to some mobility issues and just for the great views from the water. So, it depends.
