Verona or Ravenna

I will be in Venice next month and am considering to take a day trip to either Verona or Ravenna.

What are the pros and cons of each trip ? Which is more worthwhile ? I don't think I'll hsve time for two trips

Aside from the practical reasons (as sophie8 noted, Verona is more easily reached from Venice than Ravenna with public transport) is impossible to say which of the two cities is best to explore. It would be like asking which is better as a pet: a dog or a cat. It depends on the inclinations of each. Verona is an ancient, picturesque city of the Middle Ages, when it was one of the largest cities in Europe, preserving important architectural relics of the period 1200-1500; it has also important ruins of Roman Empire, and dominates the imagination for the story of Romeo and Juliet (but Juliet's balcony is a notorious scam!). Ravenna has testimonies - uniques in Western architecture - of the late Roman and early Middle Ages, when it was a capital city: to find its equal you have to go as far as Constantinople / Istanbul.

To get to Ravenna by train from Venice you need a change in Ferrara or Bologna, and a journey time between 2h30 min and 3 hours (one way).

You may consider stopping in Padova or Vicenza before or after Verona. They are great cities and on the way between Verona and Venice.

Certainly Verona is an easier journey as it is on the main line from Venice to Milan but ir really depends on what interests you. Verona has a very fine Roman arena now used for operatic performances throughout the summer and it supposed link with Shakespere's play Romeo and Juliet which the good people of Venrona have exploited with "Juliet's Balcony" erected after the 1914/18 war!

Ravenna is by far the more important city architecturally and artistically with its superb early Christian churches dating from the 4 th century onwards and equally superb mosaics of much the same period.

Your choice!
