Would this be doable for timewise?

Hey guys,

We are flying into Venice January 1st at 16.45 in the afternoon. But, we want to start our trip in Rome (can't fly in there, long story). So what we want to do is take the train to Rome that same day because Jan 1st, is a holiday so perfect for travel.

The train to Rome leaves Venice S L at 18:30, or from Mestre at 19:05

Would this be doable considering we need to clear customs, get to venice and have 2 1 year olds (in backpacks).

How long does it take us to get from Marco Polo airport to Venice/Mestre? And which option would be best for us to take?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. And if more info is needed, please let me know.

Cheers

Doable, if your plane lands on time, if you take a land taxi from the rank outside the Arrivals Hall at Marco Polo straight to Mestre station. To take a coach or a bus to Mestre may mean having to wait several minutes for them to depart.

I agree that it's doable, but would say to definitely take the train from Mestre. From SL you would have to get over to Venice proper, catch the train which would then go off the island to Mestre. You would be making a big, time-consuming round trip.

It should be doable if the plane arrives on time. I wouldn't buy tickets until you actually get to the train station.

Actually, from Mestre, you actually have trains at 17:37, 18:37, and 19:37 with Trenitalia, and 19:05 with Italo.

So I would guess that even were there a delay, unless it were something exceptional (rerouted through Trieste for fog or bad weather, and bussed back to Venice) you should be able to catch a train without difficulty. The almost three hours between your scheduled landing time and the train should be more than plenty.

Thanks guys!

We would like to purchase our tickets in advance as the cheap ones are already gone.

Now we just have to figure out the rest of our train trip lol. We are planning to see an afternoon Pisa either on the way there (stop in Florence and go first thing in morning) or on the way back.

It's quite the puzzle the Italian railroad websites.
