How is Venice's weather in January?

Is is suitable to visit Venice in January? I find some B&Bs and small hotels are closed in January. How is weather there at that time? Can Gandola sail in January? Are most shops and museums closed in January?

It is a quieter season so the odd place might be closed but Venice is a living city so most places will be open. Gondolas row all year round ( can be a bit cold) weather wise it is winter so you could get rain , damp , but you can also get cold crisp winter days . There are fewer tourists and yes museums and churches are open as normal.

It will probably be cold and damp but the advantage to visiting in January is that there will be less tourists so not a bad time to visit.

Defintely chilly and almost certainly damp to wet with a possibility of Aqua Alta. Some Hotels and B&Bs may be closed for their holiday or renovation as with restaurants but the majority are open for business as are all the shops.

Definitely the "off season" for tourists bt there are always some around at any time of the year..It would not be my first choice as a month to visit Venice, or indeed anywhere in Italy apart from Sicily

Lovely tine to visit Venice in my opinion. Far fewer tourists and often bright blue skies with lots of sunshine, so much so that people sit outside at cafes during the day. In my experience less chance of rain or acqua alta than in the autumn. Some restaurants are closed but most of the city is open as normal. It's sales time in the shops.

We were there for 4 days last January and it was cold (about 8 degrees C) a but foggy at night, but we had no rain at all. All of the main tourist attractions were open with no queues and there were plenty of gondolas around waiting for customers. We loved Venice in January due to the lack of crowds, the only down side is there were some restaurants not open, but more than enough to choose from. You also get to enjoy the Christmas lights of Venice!
