Where to go after Venice before flying out?

We are planning an 8 day trip (after 5 days in Paris) in Italy (first timers). Tentative itinerary to fly into Florence (2 1/2 days) then to Venice for 3 1/2 days and then….? Daughter wanted to see the alps and I thought about flying out of Munich but understand that drive might be a bit much given time constraints. The other idea I had was heading to Sermione on friday am and leaving Saturday night for hotel near Milan airport. I know we are trying to cram a lot into small window but trying to see as much as we can. Thanks!

It's better if you add a day to Florence instead. You will enjoy better Florence and you don't wasre time in compulsory running from a olace tk the other.

Why do you want to drive? Trains are great between Florence venice and milan.

You could check with www.delta.com who code share with Air France, for a multi city air ticket flying New York to Paris to Turin returning to New York from Pisa.

Train Turin to Aosta (Alps) to Venice to Florence to Pisa Aeroporto www.trenitalia.com Click on the UK flag for current train times, enter 08 as train departure time.

What time of year? You can see Alps in Italy, including the beautiful Dolomites, but may not be worth the detour if you are going in April or May.

If you would like a more compact trip, you could spend a night in Verona before flying out of Venice. Or visit Lago di Garda.

I have never been to either Venice or Florence for less than a week or, for that matter, to Milan and always leaving wishing i have more time to spare.. If you only have 8 days to spare then you can easily spend 4 days each in Florence and Venice.

Just read a good guide book before you leave and decide how much of each city you would like to see. Of books published in the USA I like the city guides produced by Knopf as reliable and with good stret maps but small enough to carry around with you as you wander through these cities.

If four days seems too long for you to dally in one city then cut it to 2 in each and spend a couple of days in any one of Milan, Verona, Vicenza and Padua. All these are easy to reach by rail from Venice Santa Lucia station. Just check on www.trenitalia.it of www.italotreno,.it for timetables and fares. there are often discounts available for early purchase of tickets.

If you are flying from Paris to Florence, you will see the Alps from the plane, and also very probably flying out of Milan, although this depends on direction, of course (and time of day!).

Logistically, it seems to me you should only consider somewhere between Venice and Milan, if that is where you would be flying out of. If taking the train, after Venezia Santa Lucia this passes through Mestre, Padua, Vicenza, Verona, Peschiera del Garda and Brescia on the way to Milan, each worth consideration (except Mestre, and Padua you could visit from Venice if you want to see e.g. the Giotto frescoes in the Scrovegni chapel).

Depending on the time of your flight out of Milan (Malpensa?) you might also need to spend the night before in Milan - where your daughter might enjoy a stroll down the fashion (and food) street Via Montenapoleone, and the Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II are well worth seeing even if you don't want to visit any (other) monuments / art galleries / museums / the Last Supper etc.

Thanks for the input! Not big museum people, hence the shortened Florence stay but could be persuaded otherwise. Also thought about doing a day trip to Siena if we stay an extra day in Florence as a base. Much to think about!

Both Siena and Pisa are a comfortable day out from Florence just as Padua is an easy day out from Venice.
