Train info from Venice to Rome

Can someone give me a little inside info if possible regarding train info..we will be in Venice in late August and would like to travel from Venice to Rome for a few days prior to our departing flight which does leave from Rome...do we purchase tickets before hand in Canada? Should we wait until we are in Italy? We are a family of 3 adults and 1 teenager and will be travelling with luggage..any tips will be appreciated :)

There is no need to purchase tickets in advance - and if you don't want to lock yourself in to a specific departure it would be best not to - but for the fast train you would be taking from Venezia Santa Lucia to Roma Termini (or Tiburtina/Ostiense if you choose Italotreno), it would be cheaper.

If you check on the websites you will find that advance booking gives you an opportunity of discounted fares - the earlier you book, the greater the discount

See www.trenitalia.it and www.italotreno.it for their timetables and fares. There are several express trains to choose from each day, depending what time of day you wish to travel.

If you know what date you intend traveling, then yes book in advance.from one of the sites provided by Robert-J above. You can do this from Canada. Tickets go on sale 120 days ahead, and are at their cheapest then. They go up in price progressively the closer you get to your travel date(s).

Just be aware that these advance purchase cheap tickets are non refundable and cannot be changed. So if you miss your train or decide you want to travel on a different day, you've lost your money.
